Help Your Pets Get Rid of Fleas

Insects vary in size, shape, habitat and ways to feed for survival. There are insects that thrive
on leftover food, garbage, wood and paper. However, there are also insects that survive off of
sucking blood from humans and pests. These are called fleas. Fleas are parasites - a species that
is dependent for its food from another living species. Unfortunately, they can also invade our
homes.

Fleas are small and dark with tube-like mouthparts for sucking blood from their hosts. They do
not have wings but most of them can jump vertically up to 18cm. Their common victims are
pets because of their fur and thick hair. If untreated, fleas can cause discomfort and sometimes
death to kittens and puppies. They can also cause tapeworms that can be transmitted from one
pet to the other. Fleas can be uncontrollable when they populate and they will invade your
carpet, yard, closet and they can feed on you as well. Here are some helpful tips on how to help
your pets be free of fleas.

Flea rinse products. Traditional treatment includes the use of flea shampoo, flea soap, flea
collars and flea dips. The latest flea rinse products are called top-spots. These are chemicals that
are applied between the shoulder blades and will spread throughout the skin’s oil. They are more
effective if they are applied at night.

Special flea comb. Combing your pet’s hair regularly is very helpful. There is a comb made
especially for this purpose.

Have a regular visit at your vet. Like humans are supposed to visit doctors, pets are advised to
visit their veterinarians too. This is especially recommended if there is an evident flea infestation
in your pet. There are pets that are allergic to the flea’s saliva and this can cause allergic
dermatitis. Your pet’s veterinarian can also recommend the best flea rinse solution for your pet.

Clean your house the same day you wash your pet. According to research, 95% of fleas infest
your carpet and other household items and the remaining 5% infest your pet. How do you deal
with this? First, wash your pets with a flea rinse and let your pet stay outside in the yard. With
a vacuum cleaner be sure to vacuum every part of your home including furniture, corners, and
every piece of carpet. Remember to tightly seal your vacuum bag after the process. Fleas are
not killed in the process, if you do not seal it tightly fleas will find their way out.

Spray insecticide. Spray all carpets, curtains, floors, dog beds and even your yard with
insecticides specifically made to get rid of fleas. These insecticides are designed to make sure
that even the eggs and larvae are destroyed.

It is likely that the fleas will return again within two weeks. This will normally happen
especially if your pets love to visit other pets from the neighborhood or vice versa. If this
happens, simply repeat the process again and again until you do not see any sign of fleas
pestering your pets.

The Pest Problem in Australia

Great pride is exuded by the Australian Government because it is a natural wildlife and unique ecosystem has been preserved for over hundreds of years. If you take a look at Australia even from a distance, you see a continent that is lush and green and the seas are sparkling blue.

Foreign invasion

However, in the last few years there have been alarming cases of foreign pest invasion. These foreign pests find wildlife in Australia as a good place to reproduce and multiply. These foreign pests also are endangering the environmental balance of the country. Up until now, there is still no exact information where these pests came from.

There are organizations that have done research and studies on how these pests interact with their environment and how to control them.

Feral animals

Australia certainly has unique and diversified wildlife. In most cases, it is not the presence of termites, ants, roaches and bugs that concerns them the most. Over the years, it has been the feral animals that have brought so much trouble to endanger the natural environment. Feral animals are predators and have become a problem since they started to grow in numbers. They endanger the natural wildlife by their competitive behaviour to survive, competing for food and shelter, destroying habitat and spreading disease. Feral animals can also contribute to the cause of soil erosion.

Weather conditions in Australia

Like most of the countries in the Southern hemisphere, Australia has 4 different climates: Summer, autumn, winter and spring. There may be differences in the months that these climates occur but basically, it is the same as the other countries. However, weather conditions in Australia can go to the extremes. With this in mind, temperature can go as high as 50 degrees Celsius and can go down as low as sub-zero.

Both temperature extremes trigger pests and insects to either populate or hibernate. If it is too cold outside, termites find their way into homes and build a colony there. Excessive heat and rain causes the pests and insects to transfer to an environment where they can survive. Human habitation seems to be the most comfortable place these pests like to thrive.

Winning the battle

Fortunately for residents of Australia, there are already organizations dedicated to winning the battle against the pest problem in the country. These organizations have done extensive and lucrative studies about different species of pests and insects. In order to kill these unwanted pests they try to understand the behaviour, habitation, characteristics and traits of the pests. Some pests are easy to kill. However, with the foreign pests, these organizations are still in the process of studying the species.

Throughout the ages, Australia has been infested with pests of all sorts. Records have shown different species invading the country both from foreign pests and feral animals. Moreover, there are a number of pest control companies that have joined forces to control these pests. There has been usage of conventional control like shooting, trapping, and eradicating completely them. There has been biological control as well and both have been helpful in controlling the pest problem in the country.
